It is rare but not unheard of for psychiatry residents to do away electives at other institutions if said institutions offer special electives (e.g. eating disorders, cultural psychiatry) or they want to get a fellowship (predominantly the case for forensics, but some C-L and neuropsychiatry programs offer electives for visiting residents).
